The war in Europe began in September 1939, when Nazi Germany, lead by Adolf Hitler, invaded Poland. Britain and France then declared war on Germany, needless to say they didn't really do too much damage to the German power. In1940, Germany launched its next initiative by attacking Denmark and Norway. Then they decided that attacking those countries was not good enough so they began attacking Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. All of these nations were dominated by Nazi Germany.Later in the summer of 1940, Germany launched a further attack on Britain. This was unlike other attacks made by Germany because this was an air attack. The Battle of Britain was Germany’s first military failure because they could not overcome Britain’s Royal Air Force.
The war in the Pacific began on December 7, 1941, when Japaneses planes bombed Pearl Harbor. After that Japan began a massive campaign of expansion throughout the Southeast Asia–Pacific region.
Pearl Harbor being attacked made the United States declare war on Japan the very next day. However, it would be several months before U.S. forces would get seriously involved militarily. In late spring of1942, the United States and Japan engaged in a series of naval battles. The worst one was the Battle of Midway on which took place on June 3, 1942. It was during this battle that Japan suffered a terrible defeat by the Americans.

Between August 1942 and February 1943, Allied forces carried out an invasion on the island of Guadalcanal. In the meantime, British and Indian forces were combating Japanese troops in Burma. Fighting continued throughout the Pacific in 1944 and early 1945 including major battles such as: Leyte, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. By the late 1945, most of Japan had been liberated, and Allied forces were closing in on the Japanese home islands. In early August of 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Japan was taken down and surrendered just a few short days later.
